Vanilla and Pear Jam

34

This year I decide to make something simple and comforting.
Think colors and fruit and breakfast and everyday.
Yes, it’s homemade jams.
So no more guilty jam jars from the supermarket shelf!

Make your own jam and woo your beloved over at breakfast.
Homemade jam is so delicious and surprisingly simple. Simpler than you’d ever imagine.
And the whole house smells with the tantalizing aroma of fruit while cooking.

From breakfast, to dessert and everything in between.
It is wonderful spread on toasted bread, melted and glazed onto cheesecake, or simply enjoyed spooned into yoghurt for a quick dessert.

Vanilla and Pear Jam:

Ingredients:

1kg pears, peeled, cored and cut into chunky slices
Juice of 2 lemons
750gr granulated sugar
1 vanilla pod

Method:

Place the pears in a bowl with the lemon juice to stop them discoloring. Sprinkle the sugar over the fruit and add 200ml water.
Slice the vanilla pod in half lengthways and scrape out the seeds, then tuck the pod in among the pears and add the seeds. Cover the bowl with a plate and leave overnight for the sugar to soak up some of the juices from the fruit.
The next day, pour the contents of the bowl into a preserving pan and stir over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Turn up the heat and boil rapidly to reach setting point, by which time the pear pieces will be translucent. Skim if necessary.
Remove the vanilla pod from the mixture, then pour the jam into hot, sterilized jars and seal.
